For the use of the Cello as 1st chair cello in an orchestral environment, there are also timbre EQs which place the viola in its correct position in the orchestra room. The final touch is provided by the "Room" and "Reverb" modules, which use professionally recorded convolution reverb presets to reproduce the sound of real rooms and can also be adjusted separately.

Since the Game of Thrones main titles has popularized the cello more and more sample developers (Embertone, CineSamples, Spitfire, ect.) have been trying to capture the essence of this beautiful end expressive tenor string instrument. Harmonic Subtones have recently introduced to the market yet another spectacular solo cello virtual instrument with true legato and 16 play-styles. As a cello player I tend to be overly critical towards solo strings sample libraries, but I have to say, that I have been pleasantly surprised by the Emotional cello and I was inspired by the moment I played the first notes into my DAW.

It took four long years and sampling of various instruments for the Harmonic Subtones, a Munich based developer team, to produce this unique virtual cello. The 5,37 GB instrument packs multiple articulations, some of which are truly unique to this sample libary, with 4 round robins on the long articulations and up to 8 on the shorter articulations. When I was scrolling and improvising through all the articulations I really liked the playability of the instruments. This is truly one of those sample libraries, which are so well crafted and scripted, that they just work out of the box and give you instant great results even without going under the hood and tweaking the settings.

The master Emotional cello patch contains 16 different articulations (see screen shot bellow), that are carefully ordered with keyswitches. The lower keyswitches trigger the shorter articulations (spiccato, staccato, pizzicato, fast spiccato) and the higher ones the longer articulations (delicate, delicate fast, proud vibrato, expressiv xfade, moderate 1, moderate 2, pick up, fortepiano, vivid, renaissance 1, renaissance 2, non vibrato xfade).

This is the best solo cello library I have had a chance to get my hands on and it will definitely stay in my main orchestral template for a long long time. The guys at Harmonic Subtones did a amazing job with this instrument.

Emotional offers three true legato master-patches: Normal, Sulponticello and Harmonics. These contain about 80% of all recorded articulations, which are logically interconnected using advanced scripting. For example: A note being played in the beginning will sound perfectly natural because the chosen sample will also be a first note of the source recordings. The same goes for legato- and sustained notes: All samples originate from a corresponding context of the original recordings.

2 Dimensional sustain patches: These infinite sustain patches offer continuous variation across not only dynamic layers (soft to loud), but also another dimension such as non-vibrato to vibrato, or normal to Sulponticello (playing near the bridge.) These are lovely for pads, textures, and builds. By default, mod wheel (CC1) is assigned to the dynamic layers, and you can freely assign a CC to the 2nd layer via drop down menu. I suggest assigning an expression pedal or aftertouch so you can play and vary both parameters at the same time. Very expressive and inspirational.

Conclusion Overall, Emotional Cello has some seriously expressive mojo. The secret sauce is in the brilliant scripting that they use to command the thousands of meticulously recorded samples in a way that allows a keyboard to intuitively control a solo cello expressively. Before I even read the manual I was able to play satisfying lines through natural variations in dynamics, playing style (legato vs. non-legato) and mod wheel. Once I learned about the keyswitches and hidden features, I just took it to the next level.

For $489 USD you get the whole symphonic orchestra, divided into its essential parts: strings, brass and woodwind sections with all the basic articulations where most instruments are divided into high and low part presets. The only exceptions, along with the brass section that also has a mid section, are the string presets where we can find all articulations ranked from high to low inside one preset passing discretely from violins through to viola and cello to the bass section in the low end. Usually, when strings are stretched through the whole keyboard range, the quality of the sound differs as soon as the instrument goes out of its natural range. Spitfire avoid this trap by putting all different string sections together, crossing the sound between all sections in an imperceptible way, so no matter which range you play it will sound very natural. This approach may give you a bit less freedom to go deeply into details, but on the other hand, its simplified work-flow allows you to make good arrangements in no time.
